The Cockpit Drill

DSSSM

A simple sequence of actions that must be carried out each time you sit behind the steering wheel. Before you start this ensure that the car is secure by checking the handbrake is on.

Doors
Make sure all doors are firmly shut. Take special care if you are carrying children. Use child locks if your car has them.

Seat
If the base of the seat can be moved up or down adjust this first so that your eyes are level with the middle of your windscreen.
Next, ensure that you can press the clutch fully. You should have only a slight bend in your left leg.Thirdly, adjust the angle of the backrest so you are comfortable and not stretching too far for the wheel.
Finally, adjust the head restraint so that your neck is fully supported. The centre of your headrest should be level with your eyes.

Seat Adjustment

Seatbelt
Fasten your seatbelt being careful not to twist the straps. Ensure your passengers do theirs too. The driver is responsible for ensuring that all children under the age of 14 wear seatbelts or use an approved child restraint.

Steering wheel
In some cars this can be adjusted. Use this in combination with the backrest of the seat to make sure that your arms are comfortable and your reach of the steering wheel isn’t awkward.

Mirrors

Use your left hand to move the interior mirror to ‘frame’ the back window. Be careful not to touch the glass with your fingers. Next adjust the side mirrors. They should first be adjusted side to side ensuring that you can see a small amount of the rear side of the car. After this adjust them vertically so that they show you half of the road behind and half the sky.
Your horizon should always be central. The side mirrors are usually convex. This means that the image in the mirror may seem further away.

Switching the engine on and off

Before starting the engine you should check that the handbrake is on and neutral is selected.
Turn the ignition key and immediately release it as the engine starts to avoid damaging the starter motor.
